The Frame art size and format: 3840 by 2160, and why one pixel matters
The exact size, aspect ratio, file format and colour settings for artwork on Samsung The Frame, and what the TV does to a file that does not match.
Every Frame from 32 inches to 85 inches has the same panel geometry: 3840 by 2160 pixels, 16:9. That one number is the whole specification, and almost every complaint about how custom art looks on The Frame traces back to a file that does not match it.
The number
3840 by 2160 pixels. JPEG. sRGB.
That is it. Prepare a file that way and the TV will show it the way you intended, filling the panel, with no border and no rescaling.
Why the exact size, not just the ratio
The Frame decides whether to offer the no matte, edge to edge presentation by looking at the pixel dimensions of the file you uploaded, not at its aspect ratio in the abstract. A 1920 by 1080 image is 16:9 and it will still be scaled up to fill the panel, so it arrives soft. A 3840 by 2161 image is one pixel out and the TV treats it as a picture that needs framing, so it arrives with a matte around it.
This catches people constantly, because most tools that "resize to 4K" will happily give you 3840 by 2159 when the source was an odd number of pixels tall, or will output 4096 by 2160, which is the cinema 4K width and not what the panel is.
So the rule is: check the pixel dimensions of the finished file, not the setting you typed into the export dialog.
What happens to a file that does not match

Scaling down is safe. Scaling up is not, because nothing on the TV can invent detail that is not in the file. If your source is smaller than 3840 wide, either accept the softness or upscale deliberately with a tool that does it well, which matters most for AI generated images.
Format
Use JPEG. It is the format every model and every firmware version accepts, from every route, and Art Mode re-encodes to it internally anyway.
PNG works on many models over the network routes and is refused by some over USB. It is also two to five times the file size for a photograph, with no visible benefit on a TV panel across a room. WebP, HEIC, TIFF and RAW are not reliable. Convert first.
Quality: export at 85 to 95. Below 80 you will see banding in skies and flat colour fields, which is exactly where a large panel is unforgiving. Above 95 you are adding megabytes the panel cannot show. There is no reason for a Frame image to be larger than about 5 MB.
Colour
Export in sRGB. The TV assumes sRGB and does not read embedded colour profiles the way a photo editor does, so an Adobe RGB or ProPhoto file arrives with dull, shifted colour. If your editor offers "Convert to sRGB" on export, use it, and do not simply assign the profile.
Strip the EXIF orientation flag by making the export actually rotated rather than tagged as rotated. A file that relies on the orientation tag can appear on its side, and this is one of the few things that behaves differently between the USB and network routes on the same TV.
Cropping to 16:9 without ruining the picture
Most photographs are not 16:9, so something has to give.
- Crop, do not squash. Never resize a 4:3 image to 3840 by 2160 without cropping; it stretches faces and horizons in a way that is instantly obvious even to people who cannot say why.
- Crop from the long edge. For a 3:2 camera file, 16:9 takes a slice off the top and bottom. Compose for it: leave headroom when you shoot, if you know the picture is destined for the wall.
- A portrait photograph is not going to work full screen. Two honest options: accept the matte, which The Frame does tastefully, or build a 3840 by 2160 composition around it, with the portrait image centred on a background you chose.
Doing this for a hundred images
Doing it by hand in an editor is fine for five pictures and a bad use of an evening for a hundred. Any batch tool will do it: ImageMagick, Lightroom export presets, XnConvert, or an app that does it as part of sending.
TV Art Manager does this step on the way to the TV. It takes JPG, PNG and WebP as input, fills and centre crops each one to exactly 3840 by 2160, exports sRGB JPEG, and sends the result with the matte off, keeping your original files untouched where they are. That means you never think about the number again, which is the point.
The quick checklist
- Crop to 16:9 with intent.
- Resize to exactly 3840 by 2160 and verify the finished file.
- Export JPEG, quality 85 to 95, sRGB.
- Upload, and check the TV offers no matte rather than a border.
